Sludge is what kills a boiler here
Iron and mineral come off the inside of a hydronic system over the years and settle as a black sludge in the return. It coats the heat exchanger, blocks the bottom of radiators, and grinds out circulator pumps. When is the best time to have the boiler serviced?
Late summer through early fall. The system has been idle for months, any problem found can be fixed without you sitting in a cold house, and we are not booked solid with emergencies. Waiting until the first cold snap is how people end up on a waiting list.
Does an annual service really save money?
It does two things. A clean burner and correct combustion mean the boiler uses less fuel for the same heat. And catching a failing expansion vessel or pump in October is a routine visit instead of an emergency call on a holiday weekend.
Do I have to bleed my own radiators?
You can, and it is worth knowing how. We do it as part of the service and check the pressure afterward, which is the step people usually miss. If radiators need bleeding often, air is getting in somewhere and that is worth finding.
Will skipping a service void my warranty?
On most manufacturers, yes. They require documented annual servicing by a licensed professional. We leave you the record after every visit so you have it if you ever need to make a claim.
What is a magnetic filter and do I need one?
It is a canister on the return pipe that catches the iron oxide circulating through the system. On the older hydronic systems common in DC and Montgomery County, it keeps that debris out of the heat exchanger and the pump. Yes, we recommend one.
